What’s the best way to find loose gems for custom jewelry?

Not in bulk, just for one or two pieces.

Generally if you find a local Goldsmith or jewellery maker they should be able to source stones for you. I work for a goldsmith and it is something we do very regularly, whether we are going to make the piece or if the just want the loose stone.
People may suggest eBay, however I would be very careful on what you are purchasing. We have had people visiting us who have bought stones from eBay and have turned out not to be what they thought. My advice if you were to choose this method is to do your research. Find out all you can about the type of stone you want and what it usually cost. With stones, if a price is too good to be true, be extra careful, there are a lot of fakes and modified stones out there.
